Is Linux not just Unix-like?

Tuesday, August 12th, 2008

I found an interesting posting on Paul Murphys blog: Unix vs. Linux. It’s an old one, dated 2005, but nevermind. It compares Unix vs Linux (duh) and what I’ve always wondered is what on earth is the big difference that makes Linux only Unix-like?

Well, opinions differ, but let me quote the conclusion in the end of this one:

The bottom line? Linux not only looks like a duck, waddles like a duck, quacks like a duck, wears duck feathers, and hatched from a duck egg, but it also has duck guts. In other words, it’s a duck: every bit as much a part of the Unix development tradition as Solaris or the BSDs.
